The Nurse Practitioner (NP) , Wound/Ostomy/Continence Care is an Advanced Practice Nurse certified as a Clinical Nurse Specialist or Nurse Practitioner who provides acute and rehabilitative care for people with select disorders of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and integumentary systems. (S)he functions as an APN within the Wound Ostomy Department at St. Catherine Hospital providing services for patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.  The APN offers direct patient care, education, and counseling for persons with abdominal stomas, wounds, fistulas, drains, pressure ulcers, vascular ulcers, and skin problems related to fecal and urinary continence.  (S)he demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient population served. (S)he serves as a clinical resource, consultant, researcher, and educator to the medical and nursing staff in developing, implementing, and evaluating care based on APN specialized area of expertise, physician orders, current established Standards of Care, the Nurse Practice Act, the St. Catherine Hospital Policies and Procedures and Medical Staff bylaws, rules and responsibilities. Goals and priorities are established in accordance with patient/staff needs and organizational objectives. These endeavors are conducted, in a positive attitude, within the established objectives, policies, procedures, and philosophical framework of the Wound Ostomy Department, Patient Care Services and St. Catherine Hospital.  They are directed toward the achievement of excellence in patient care.
  • Must have successfully completed an accredited program for a Clinical Nurse Specialist or Nurse Practitioner with a minimum of a master’s degree of nursing, completion of certification; licensed to practice in the State of Indiana with 2 years current experience preferred in wound and ostomy/continence care. 
  • Completion of a WOCN Accredited Professional Education Program and WOCN certification preferred; enrollment in program should be obtained within one year of appointment with WOCN certification completed within one year of appointment. 
  • Documentation of prescriptive authority granted by the State of Indiana and a valid controlled substance certification must be on file in the Medical Staff Services Department prior to ordering of medications. 
  • Must successfully complete credentialing and privileging process before functioning as an Advanced Practice Nurse.  Demonstration of completion of an advanced physical assessment class. 
  • Successful completion of the St. Catherine Hospital Personnel and Nursing Orientation Programs. 
  • Completes continuing education as required by certification. 
  • Member of appropriate professional organization. 
  • Obtains and maintains current CPR Certification. 
  • Computer literacy with familiarity of Windows and data base management.
  • Must demonstrate self–assessment, initiation and the ability to work collaboratively on a team. 
  • Must have a customer service orientation and ability to communicate and listen effectively.
  • Must demonstrate flexibility and the ability to accept change.
