  • Conducts diagnostic interviews with patients and families to determine and evaluate the patient's support system in preparation for discharge from the inpatient psychiatric units, or to optimally live in the community as an outpatient.
  • Obtains and records a complete psychosocial history (i.e. physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual components as well as the patient's current needs) through clinical interviewing the patient and significant other(s).
  • Conducts family meetings with the psychiatric inpatient and her/his significant others/family members as ordered by the Attending Psychiatrist.
  • Maintains appropriate departmental records and statistics.
  • Makes community assistance referrals for patients and families according to post-discharge planning and physician recommendations.
  • Regularly participates in weekly group supervision and presents clinical cases as assigned.
  • Participates in the Code Yellow Team as requested by the BHS Charge Nurse after appropriate training and certification.
  • Functions as a cooperative and active member of the BHS Team by providing daily therapeutic modalities for patients hospitalized in the psychiatric unit at St. Catherine Hospital.
  • Begins and ends groups according to the daily schedules for each psychiatric unit. Is able to make changes as required by the needs of the units and according to patient acuity.
  • Develops and documents psychological treatment goals for each patient.
  • Completes patient charting in a timely manner according to the established practice of BHS and the discipline of clinical social work.
  • If licensed, may provide clinical supervision as directed by the BHS Director or Licensed Clinical Psychologist.
  • Attends BHS unit meetings.
  • Attends clinical, department, and hospital-wide in-service presentations and also presents a yearly in-service to department members on the topic of clinical social work.
  • Attends quarterly Department of BHS/Psychiatry meetings as required.
  • Maintains core competencies and licensure/certifications requirements per the discipline and hospital requirements.   
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, psychological, educational, and safety standards criteria appropriate to a psychiatric population age 18 and older for the following diagnoses or dual diagnoses: schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, mood disorders (depression and bipolar), anxiety disorders (panic, agoraphobia, PTSD, acute stress, generalized anxiety); adjustment disorders, personality disorders (i.e. paranoid, schizoid, schizotypal, antisocial, borderline, histrionic, narcissistic, avoidant, dependent, and obsessive-compulsive); substance abuse and substance dependence; impulse-control disorder (i.e. intermittent-explosive, kleptomania, pyromania, pathological gambling, and trichotillomania).
  • Possesses the ability to assess the clinical data reflective of a psychiatric patient's mental status and to interpret information needed to accurately identify each patient's mental status and to interpret information needed to accurately plan for age-specific needs.
  • Has knowledge of psychiatric medications such as antipsychotics, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, lithium, and clozaril.
  • Understands and is able to use non-violent crisis intervention.
  • Completes yearly non-violent crisis intervention in-service competency.
  • Is able to care for patients in restraints.
Understands legal psychiatric documents such as involuntary and voluntary psychiatric admissions and emergency detention orders (EDO), and commitment forms for long-term care.
