After the patient's plan of care has been determined by the team leader (RN), the Nursing Assistant performs various designated patient care activities necessary in caring for the personal needs, comfort and safety of the patient in accordance with Hospital Policy and Nursing Service Standards. Performs general clerical duties and patient centered activities in a hospital nursing unit.
Scope of care:  Patients include new moms and their newborn infants. The average age is 30 years old for post-delivered patients. The most frequent admissions are the post-delivery patients, which are a combination of normal vaginal delivery (NVD) and Cesarean Sections.  Undelivered patients admitted most frequently include: hypertension (HTN), pre-eclampsia, diabetes, and hyperemesis.  Pre and Post-operative gynecology patients are also admitted, routine infant care includes the use of phototherapy for hyperbilirubinemia, and care of male infants during and after circumcision.
Education/Experience:
High School graduation or equivalency. One year direct patient care experience with successful completion of competency exam, completion of one semester of clinicals in nursing program or completion of nursing assistant certification required. CPR certification recommended. Supplemental commercial school/college courses in typing, computer technology, and medical terminology are desirable. Completes annual skill validations as well as safety and infection control procedures. Completion of hospital's order entry training program required.
