POSITION PURPOSE AND SUMMARY The Phlebotomist serves as a liaison between the hospital laboratory and the patient by collecting blood specimens, urine and other specimens from both inpatients and outpatients, under general supervision, according to prescribed aseptic technique, for use in clinical and diagnostic laboratory testing. The Phlebotomist is capable of handling problem-solving regarding appropriate specimen collection, handling, delivery of specimens to the main laboratory for analysis, test order and specimen information entry in LIS, and performs incidental clerical, cleaning and supply duties. Duties are performed under the supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor, Charge/Lead Phlebotomist, and Laboratory Site Director/Site Laboratory Manager.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:Education/Required –
High school graduate or equivalent.
Must have at least one of the following:
- Successful completion of accredited Phlebotomy certification program
- Successful completion of an EMT-Basic program with current licensure
- Successful completion of a licensed Paramedic program with current licensure
Certification/Required
Must have at least one of the following:
- Registered or eligible with NPA/NCA/ASPT/AMT/ASCP. Must pass certification within 1 year of hire.
- EMT Basic and Licensed Paramedics do not need a phlebotomy certification if phlebotomy is part of the curriculum. EMT/Paramedic certification/licensure must be maintained yearly.
- Medical Assistants do not need a phlebotomy certification if part of curriculum. MA certification must be maintained yearly
Certification/Option
Experience – One year of previous experience in phlebotomy required for those non-MA and non-EMT Basic/Licensed Paramedic applicants. For MA and EMT Basica/Licensed Paramedic applicants, two years of experience in their field is required.
